ORNAMENTAL/LANDSCAPE SHRUBS

Deciduous shrubs and a few broadleaf evergreen shrubs are planted throughout the arboretum. They vary in size from those small enough for use as a groundcover to those approaching the size of a small tree.

Most shrubs are grouped according to genus for the convenience of study and comparison. Major collections include boxwood (Buxus), Hydrangea, Roses (Rosa), lilacs (Syringa), and Viburnum.

The Alma Rose Garden features hardy shrub roses that are resistant to disease and continue to flower throughout the growing season.

Most shrubs offer attractive and often fragrant flowers. Many also bear attractive fruits and offer autumn foliage coloration. Dogwoods (Cornus) and willows (Salix) often have colorful bark in winter.

The newest and best cultivars of shrubs adapted to the upper Midwest are featured at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum.
